By Kaushik Bhattacharya :

Prabhag No 33 is a stronghold of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in previous elections despite narrow wins. It is the constituency of BJP MLA Mohan Mate. Despite firm hold in this constituency, the upcoming Municipal Elections will not be a cake walk for BJP as BSP may also have the calibre to change the game on pending civic issues and cast politics. Prabhag No 33 consists of areas like Kausalyayan Nagar, Kukade Layout, Joshiwadi, New Babulakheda, Parvatinagar, Rao Saheb Thavare High School, New- Kailashnagar, Republican Vasahat, Pragati Nagar, Nalandanagar, Kunjilalpeth, Vasant Nagar, Rameshwari, Havarapeth, Dwarakapuri, Baghwan Nagar, Banerjee Layout, Parvatinagar, Balaji Nagar (Extension) On The West, Mahatma Fule Nagar, Ulhas Nagar, Naik Nagar, Mitra Nagar, Chandranagara, Baghwan Nagar Bank Colony, Bajrang nagar, New Dhyaneshwar nagar, and Shramjivi Nagar.

2017 nmc election prabhag no 33

BJP’s 3-1 win in 2017

In the 2017 civic polls, former standing committee chairman and BJP’s senior corporator Ramesh Shingare lost the election against Indian National Congress’s (INC) Manojkumar Gawande on Prabhag No 33D seat by a margin of 3,031 votes. However, BJP won remaining three seats of this Prabhag without any problem. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) gave tough fight to BJP on all the three seats. Though it was always a stronghold for BJP, the upcoming civic election may be a game changer for BSP, as many pending issues that not yet addressed by corporators will cost the BJP. Vishakha Bante of BJP bagged the highest percentage of vote in previous election as she bagged 12,743 total votes. Bante defeated Satyabhama Lokhande of BSP who got 9,959 votes. Bharati Bunde and Vandana Bhagat from BJP also won the previous battle in this Prabhag.

SC voters can turn the tide

The total population of this Prabhag is 67,572. Total SC population in this Prabhag is 26,736. Along with this, the density of Hindu, Muslim and North Indian population is also high. Therefore, SC voters will dominate this Prabhag as all parties planted SC candidates in all four wards of this Prabhag for upcoming polls. Along with this, political parties should also keep in mind about population density of other communities as well.

Civic problems unsolved

As the Prabhag No 33 is situated near the Inner Ring Road, the residents and commuters are fed-up of severe traffic jams during peak hours. Citizens coming from Pardi, Kalamna, and Kamptee areas mainly follow the ring road to reach South West and West Nagpur localities. Citizens are demanding Metro Rail service on Ring Road which is yet to come into the notice of the decision-makers. Along with this, cleanliness is an another major issue in Prabhag No 33 as many inner lanes of residential areas are full of garbage. Lack of parking area in residential localities is also a big issue as the inner lanes are narrow. Though all main and inner roads turned into concrete roads, the water-logging also causes problem for residents during monsoon season. Poor drainage system causes water-logging in many residential areas. These are some major issues in Prabhag No 33 which should be addressed by political parties in coming civic elections.
