NATIONAL Green Tribunal’s
(NGT) Central Zone Bench in
Bhopal has directed concerned
departments to strictly comply
with Central Pollution Control
Board (CPCB) guidelines on idol
immersion in Bhoj Wetland,
including the Upper and Lower
Lakes, Shahpura Lake and other water bodies. The matter was
heard on Tuesday.
POP IDOLS RAISE POLLUTION CONCERNS: The issue is
part of Original Application No.
189/2026 (CZ), filed by environmental activist Nitin Saxena.
During the hearing, the petitioner raised concerns over the
use of plaster of Paris (PoP),
chemical colours and other nonbiodegradable materials in idols,
citing their potential impact on
water quality.
ARTIFICIAL TANKS SOUGHT
FOR IMMERSION: The petitioner sought adequate artificial
immersion ponds and tanks to
prevent direct immersion of idols
in natural water bodies without
interfering with religious practices. The plea also called for sufficient alternative arrangements
ahead of major festivals.
DELAY IN ALTERNATIVE
ARRANGEMENTS FLAGGED:
The Tribunal was informed that
the Bhopal Municipal
Corporation (BMC) had
approved a proposal in July 2025
to develop artificial immersion
facilities at Prempura,
Barkatullah University, Sanjeev
Nagar, Malikhedi and other
locations at an estimated cost
of Rs 25.08 crore. However, the
petitioner pointed out that adequate alternatives were not
available by the 2026 Ganesh
festival.
WATER QUALITY TESTING
SOUGHT: The petitioner
sought testing of water quality and heavy metal levels
before, during and after idol
immersion. It also sought scientific disposal of idol remains,
flowers, garlands, cloth, plastic and other waste generated
after immersion.
PERMANENT IMMERSION
PLAN PROPOSED: The petitioner further sought a timebound and permanent idol
immersion management plan
for Bhopal ahead of the upcoming Durga festival and other
religious events, to prevent
recurring pollution of natural
water bodies.
NEXT HEARING ON
NOVEMBER 17: The NGT
directed the concerned respondents to ensure compliance
with CPCB guidelines relating
to idol immersion. The matter
will next be heard on November
17.
