The world of snakes ‘Naglok’ comes alive at Shiv Durga Utsav Mandal, Khamla
By Saniya Chakraborty :
What happens when the mysterious world of serpents becomes the centrepiece of Navratri celebrations? Shiv Durga Utsav Mandal in Khamla offers its own fascinating answer with a Naglok-themed pandal that brings moving snakes, and an eco-friendly celebration
together.
The outside of the pandal is just like a cave from where you can enter the world of snakes. In its 14th year, the mandal takes visitors into a world inspired by mythology, with serpents forming the heart of the decorations and planets positioned above them.
The moving snakes add a lifelike element to the setting, creating an intriguing visual experience for visitors. The ‘Naglok’ has been made by artist Tushar Rathod and his team.
Last year, the organisers recreated the world of Jurassic Park and this year they move from dinosaurs to the mythical realm of Naglok, keeping the excitement of discovering a new theme alive. Adding to the spiritual essence of the pandal is the Durga idol, crafted by Devendra Khapekar and brought from Besa. Made entirely of clay, the murti reflects the organisers’ commitment to an eco-friendly celebration. The use of natural materials also keeps traditional craftsmanship at the centre of the festivities.
The environmentally conscious approach extends to the decorations, with used carpets being repurposed for the pandal’s setup. By reusing existing materials instead of relying entirely on new ones, the organisers show how creativity can contribute to a more sustainable celebration.
Sandeep Samundre, organiser of the programme leads the arrangements for this year’s festivities. “Over 14 years, the mandal continues to explore fresh concepts that bring devotees together and make each Navratri a distinctive experience,” expressed Samundre.
With its imaginative Naglok setting, moving serpents and clay Durga idol, Shiv Durga Utsav Mandal offers visitors a celebration that goes beyond conventional decorations.
It combines mythology, craftsmanship and environmental awareness, keeping devotion
at the heart of its creative
vision.
