The Vidarbha Rig Owner Welfare Association (Nagpur) has urged the administration to reconsider the ban on borewell drilling, saying a blanket restriction during the drought could affect both residents seeking water and the livelihoods of workers dependent on the business. Addressing a press conference at the Patrakar Club of Nagpur, Civil Lines, on Tuesday, association members said they were complying with the Government’s order issued on October 9, 2026, but appealed for a solution that balances public needs with groundwater conservation. Abhay Agrwal, VC President, Nagpur, said borewell work should not be stopped completely. Instead, drilling could be permitted subject to conditions. Rainwater-harvesting systems and recharge shafts should be encouraged, particularly as development and cemented surfaces limit the absorption of rainwater into the ground.

He argued that regulated drilling, backed by recharge measures, would be more practical than a complete prohibition. He also suggested that permissions be considered according to rainfall and groundwater conditions in talukas, rather than applying a blanket ban everywhere. The association’s representatives also highlighted the employment impact of the order. According to the members, around 350 drilling machines operate in Vidarbha, with each machine providing work to approximately 10 to 15 people. A shutdown, they said, would affect operators and workers as well as families dependent on the trade. Agrwal also informed about the association’s recent meeting with the District Collector, where he told them he will look into the matter after the Graduate Constituency elections are done. The members said the association was willing to cooperate with the administration and follow rules. Avinash Wanjari, Secretary, Prashant Bangirwar, Treasurer and Gulab Tichkule were also present among others.
