NMCs much-hyped crackdown fizzles out

Political interference and inter-departmental apathy derail action against 100 illegal structures

Announced with much fanfare under the ambitious ‘NMC in Action Mode’ campaign, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) joint enforcement drive against unauthorised structures and fire safety violators has fizzled out. Slated between August 12 and September 18, the high-decibel crackdown aimed to seal or demolish at least 100 non-compliant commercial complexes, hospitals, tuition centres, and godowns across the city. Over three weeks after its conclusion, however, the initiative has quietly vanished without leaving any trace of tangible ground-level action or institutional accountability. The plan was conceptualised in a review meeting chaired by Mayor Neeta Thakre in early August, where clear instructions were issued to all 10 municipal zones to identify 10 priority non-compliant establishments each. To eliminate bureaucratic delays, unified task forces combining the Fire Department, Town Planning, Enforcement Wing, and Zonal Offices were instituted to leverage statutory powers for prompt sealing. Sources within the civic body reveal that while around 200 notices were served to errant property owners, actual field action was crippled by brazen political meddling. Insiders disclosed that whenever demolition squads mobilised on-site to demolish or seal a structure, phone calls from influential power brokers forced teams to abandon the operation mid-way.

When ‘The Hitavada’ sought a concrete data regarding the drive’s actual achievements, inter-departmental buck-passing came to light. The Enforcement Department, along with the Fire Department maintained that it possessed no compiled data on action taken. Despite instructions mandating each zone to conduct field verifications and submit photo-documented reports covering building ownership, structural infractions, and fire safety compliance directly to the Mayor and senior leadership, no consolidated dossier exists.
Hobbled by administrative apathy, departmental silos, and back-door political patronage, yet another loudly trumpeted NMC crackdown has struggled to reach its designated mark, quietly dissolving into thin air.
