Files affidavit in High Court; new access route created through Sanman Lawn

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has demolished an unauthorised slab constructed over the Kachipura drain in Shankar Nagar area. The road has been closed with barricades. However, a new temporary access route has been created through Sanman Lawn to reach the dhabas (roadside eateries) in the area. The civic body informed the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court about the action through an affidavit filed in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL). The affidavit was submitted by Rajkumar Anandrao Meshram, Assistant Commissioner of Dharampeth Zone No. 2.The development followed a site inspection conducted on October 12, 2026.

The inspection was carried out in compliance with the High Court’s order dated October 5, 2026. During the inspection, officials found that a portion of the compound wall of Sanman Lawn, located alongside West High Court Road, had been demolished. A temporary pathway had been created through the opening to provide access to the eateries. The inspection indicated that the pathway passes through the plot occupied by Sanman Lawn. The owners of the eateries have reportedly made alternative arrangements to ensure that customers can reach their establishments. The earlier route connected the internal areas of Shankar Nagar to the eateries by crossing the Kachipura drain. The NMC demolished the unauthorised slab and installed barricades to prevent access to this stretch. According to the affidavit, the road has now been completely closed. Neither vehicles nor pedestrians are using the route. The alternative pathway passes through Sanman Lawn, located beside the drain running along the left side of the main road connecting Shankar Nagar Square and Bajaj Nagar Square. The civic body’s action and the alternative access arrangement were brought to the High Court’s notice through the affidavit. Advocate Gemini Kasat represented the Nagpur Municipal Corporation.
