Tehsil Police have arrested Pramod Bhagchandani, who is accused of running an extortion racket for over two decades. He was arrested in a case involving a garment trader and remanded to four-day police custody by a court. Following his arrest, several victims gathered at the Tehsil police station. Some came forward to share their experiences and demanded action against others involved in the racket. According to police, Bhagchandani allegedly used information obtained through Right to Information (RTI) applications about construction projects to threaten citizens and traders. He would threaten to get their structures demolished or damage their reputation unless they paid him. His network operated in Jaripatka, Itwari, Gandhibagh and Mahal. Some traders and members of a criminal group active in North Nagpur acted as intermediaries.

The complainant in the case is Harish Rochaldas Kevalramani (62), a garment trader with a shop in Gandhibagh. Police said Bhagchandani allegedly threatened to file complaints against him with the Excise and Police departments. He also allegedly threatened to defame the trader, whose family enjoys a respected position in the Sindhi community. Kevalramani reportedly paid him Rs 2 lakh but continued to face demands for more money. The Tehsil police registered a case on October 9. Since September 20, six cases have reportedly been registered against Bhagchandani. Victims have also alleged that some officials and employees of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation and Nagpur Improvement Trust issued notices based on fabricated complaints. They have demanded action against officials found involved.
