Marriage pressure led to fatal dispute, say police

A 38-year-old woman was murdered by her lover, who attacked her with a heavy object and inflicted burns on her body using a room heater. The incident took place under the jurisdiction of MIDC Police Station. The accused was arrested in Jalgaon and remanded to police custody until October 17. The accused has been identified as Javed Sheikh Shahid Manyar (33), a resident of Shiv Colony in Raver tehsil of Jalgaon district. He works as an air-conditioner repair technician. The deceased, identified as Savita (name changed), was married and had two daughters, aged 11 and 13. According to police, Savita had known Javed for around 15 years. Their acquaintance developed into a romantic relationship. Even after Savita married a security guard based in Nagpur, the relationship continued. Police said Savita had recently been pressuring Javed to marry her.

Since he was already married, he tried to avoid the issue. Savita reportedly threatened to lodge a legal complaint against him if he refused. Javed told her that he would meet her on Sunday. Savita’s husband had gone to his native village on Friday for work. On Saturday afternoon, she left her daughters at her brother’s house. Javed arrived at Savita’s home on Sunday morning and stayed there throughout the day. An argument reportedly broke out in the evening over the marriage issue. During the dispute, Javed hit Savita on the head with a heavy object, leaving her unconscious. He then used a room heater to inflict burns on her body, causing her death. He fled that night and returned to Jalgaon by train. The incident came to light on Monday morning when Savita’s daughters returned home. Initially, the family suspected that she had died due to an electric shock from the heater. A police team led by Senior Police Inspector Baburao Raut reached the spot and conducted a panchnama.

The body was sent for post-mortem examination. Police initially registered an accidental death case. However, the preliminary medical report indicated that the death was unnatural. The findings suggested that Savita had suffered a head injury and burns. Following further investigation, police traced Javed to Jalgaon and arrested him. He was brought to Nagpur and produced before a court on Tuesday. The court remanded him to police custody until October 17.
