Civic authorities took note of garbage accumulation at two prime locations outside Nagpur Railway Station and the same was cleared, providing relief to passengers and staff. The development follows ‘The Hitavada’ report on October 13. The report exposed the alarming condition of the square and DRM office parking under the headline
‘DRM office parking, Railway Station Square turn into dumping grounds’.
The report highlighted how heaps of plastic waste, thermocol plates, discarded food packets and rotting organic waste were strewn across the footpath at the main station square below Tekdi flyover and inside the two-wheeler parking near Central Railway Mazdoor Sangh board.
The stretch, beautified with wall paintings, was overshadowed by stench. Stray cattle were seen feeding on the pile, blocking pedestrian movement.
During a spot visit on Thursday, it was seen that the garbage has been picked up and the area swept clean. The workers were seen clearing the square and the DRM parking.
A daily commuter, Ujjwal Wankhede, who was waiting for an auto at the square, said, “This is the first impression of
Nagpur station. Now it is clean.” NMC said regular monitoring will be ensured to prevent re-accumulation.
