Chhattisgarh’s first solar-powered toilet facility for girls has been constructed at the Government Primary and Middle School in Tarra village of Abhanpur block in Raipur district under the ‘Meri Beti-Mera Abhiman’ campaign. Built at a cost of Rs 7 lakh, the facility provides modern sanitation amenities to 70 female students and two female teachers. The initiative is being implemented under the Viksit Bharat Rozgar evam Aajeevika Guarantee Mission Gramin (VB-G RAM-G). Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai launched the statewide campaign to ensure that girls in rural government schools have access to proper toilet facilities by January 26, 2027.

The new facility in Tarra features solar-powered lighting, a water supply system with taps and a storage tank, and a sanitary pad incinerator. Separate toilets, ramps and support railings have also been provided for girls with disabilities. The premises have been improved with paver blocks, plantation and a proper sanitation system. Of the total construction cost, Rs 5 lakh was provided under the VB-G RAM-G scheme, while an additional Rs 2 lakh was contributed by District Collector Gaurav Singh through the Minor Mineral Development Fund.

Previously, the school’s toilets were in a dilapidated condition, forcing girl students to return home to use the facilities. Female teachers also had to rely on the toilets at the Panchayat building. The lack of proper sanitation affected students’ school attendance and caused difficulties for both students and teachers. The new facility has brought relief to the students, who said the earlier lack of functional toilets had caused considerable inconvenience and sometimes discouraged them from attending school. They welcomed the availability of clean and accessible facilities, while the teachers also expressed satisfaction with the development. Janpad Panchayat Abhanpur Chief Executive Officer Dayanand Dewangan said sites had been identified for the construction of 94 girls’ toilets across the block under the campaign. Similar facilities equipped with modern amenities, including sanitary pad incinerators, are planned at the identified locations under the guidance of the district administration.
