In a major push for transparency, Indian Railways has begun equipping its Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) with body-worn cameras that will record both video and audio during ticket checks. The latest order for 56 cameras has been placed to document interactions between passengers and staff, a move aimed at ending the he-said-she-said nature of onboard disputes. The footage will serve as direct evidence to verify complaints received via Rail Madad and reduce inquiry time. Senior railway officials said that the requirement was felt for the last two years, as TTEs remain on the frontline of enforcement against ticketless travel and often face counter-allegations.

The devices are expected to be operational within the next two to three months, starting with premium services including Vande Bharat Express. The initiative is not isolated. The Division has already launched bodycams for its checking staff, while Danapur and Chhattisgarh divisions have begun training and pilot deployment. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) is also expanding its use of bodycams linked to security control rooms. Officials said that the first phase covers only a section of the 300-plus checking staff, with a phased pan-India expansion planned subject to clear data storage and privacy protocols. For passengers and staff alike, the message is now simple: the camera will be the witness.
