AS THE beats of dhol and rhythm of traditional Garba music fill the air, Nagpurians groove to the music and enjoy every bit of the most-awaited part of Navratri celebrations.
What once began for dance lovers in small circles and close-knit gatherings has now expanded into a large-scale workshops, grand venues and festive nights that bring people together from across the city. Over the years, Garba has evolved from a dance practised by a limited group of admirers into a celebration that attracts youngsters, families and even amateurs eager to be a part of the festive night.
One of the most visible changes has been growing popularity of organised Garba workshops ahead of Navratri. Instead of learning a few steps, Garba enthusiasts are now enrolling in sessions to master the footwork, rhythm and formations associated with the dance.
For many, these workshops have become an opportunity to prepare for the festive season while meeting people who share their liking.
“Earlier, people mostly gathered in small groups to practise a few steps. Now, more people are approaching us to master the steps before Navratri. There is greater interest among youngsters and beginners, and organised workshops have become an important part of the preparation,” shared Ankush Bangi, a Garba instructor. The magnitude of celebration has grown in scale, with big grounds and dedicated venues hosting organised Garba and Dandiya nights.
Once mere intimate gatherings have now developed into elaborate events featuring music, lighting and arrangements. “The scale of Garba celebrations has changed over the years. People now look forward to the entire experience, from music and venue to the atmosphere. The growing participation has encouraged organisers to plan bigger events,” said an event organiser Atharv Jain.
Social media has fuelled the trend with creative dance videos, festive outfits and catchy dance steps inspiring more people to participate. For youngsters, Garba is not just a dance but also an opportunity to socialise, celebrate traditions and create memories with friends.
Despite the growing scale, the essence of Garba remains unchanged. Rooted in rhythm, devotion and togetherness, the dance continues to bring people together.
