Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is considering a suggestion to introduce a ‘Dial for Tree’ facility to encourage citizens to take part in plantation activities across the city. The idea was raised during a stakeholders’ meeting held recently to discuss the recommendations of the Environmental Status Report (ESR) 2024-25 prepared by CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI). Ganesh Rathod, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Garden Department), said, “The suggestion was raised during the meeting and will be discussed further before any decision was taken. The suggested facility would provide residents a channel to seek saplings and assistance for plantation in their localities. However, the civic body has not yet decided whether to take the idea forward.” The discussion comes amid recommendations in the ESR on improving Nagpur’s green cover and expanding access to green spaces.

 

The report has emphasised the need to prioritise native tree species suited to local conditions and identify areas where additional plantation is required. South Nagpur has also been identified for development of new urban green spaces. The recommendations include reviewing roadside plantations across different zones and wards to identify gaps in greenery, along with allocating funds for plantation and maintenance. The report has further highlighted ‘3-30-300’ principle for increase the green cover. It envisages residents being able to see at least three trees from their homes, achieving 30 per cent tree canopy cover in neighbourhoods and having access to a green space within 300 metres. Encouraging greenery in buildings was also discussed. Recognition for environment-friendly buildings could encourage practices such as rooftop gardens and vertical greenery, particularly in areas with limited space for conventional plantation. The suggestions are part of broader discussion on improving the city’s green cover.
