Gram panchayats asked to enforce water

Staff Reporter

Gram panchayats across Nagpur district have been directed to prepare and implement a standard operating procedure (SOP) for water supply management, conservation and prevention of wastage in view of the drought-like situation. The directive calls for a review of water availability, existing supply schemes, storage levels and the possibility of shortages in every village. Gram panchayats have been asked to prepare water supply schedules, including supply on alternate days, wherever necessary. Officials have also been instructed to identify and repair leakages in pipelines, public taps, valves and water tanks on priority. Awareness campaigns involving gram sabhas, women’s self-help groups, schools and residents will be conducted to promote water conservation.

The guidelines also mandate measures for safe reuse of water discharged from RO systems and preparation of action plans for villages facing shortages. Households will be required to install taps on water connections, with punitive action proposed for violations. Meetings involving block development officers, sarpanches and village-level officials will coordinate implementation.
