The Public Works Department (PWD) will soon begin widening the congested Kalamna-Kamptee road into a four-lane concrete stretch, with Rs 30 crore sanctioned under the Central Road fund. The project aims to improve traffic movement on a key route connecting the Kalamna market with Kamptee Road and linking sections of the Inner Ring Road and the road beyond the railway overbridge. At present, the stretch beyond Kalamna market is narrow and in a dilapidated condition, with damaged asphalt at several locations. Heavy vehicles regularly use the route owing to the Kalamna market and the area’s commercial activity, putting additional pressure on the existing two-lane road. The limited road width has contributed to traffic congestion, accident risks and dust pollution, inconveniencing traders, transport operators and daily commuters. The proposed widening is expected to provide more space for vehicular movement and improve access to the busy market area.

The project is particularly significant for the movement of goods vehicles serving Kalamna’s wholesale trading activities. A wider carriageway could help ease bottlenecks and improve connectivity between the market, Kamptee road and adjoining parts of the city. The project involves more than widening the existing road. The stretch will be developed as a four-lane concrete road to provide a more durable surface and reduce recurring maintenance requirements. Paved drains will also be constructed along both sides of the road. These are intended to improve rainwater drainage and prevent waterlogging during monsoon, which can further damage road surfaces and disrupt traffic. The road falls under the Major District Road (MDR) category and is an important link in the city’s road network. Its present condition and limited width have made the proposed upgrade a significant infrastructure requirement. With the estimated cost pegged at Rs 30 crore, the work is expected to address long-standing problems faced by road users. PWD is all set to launch the project soon. A specific construction start date and completion deadline have not been announced.
