Exposing the gaps in lifting of garbage from street corners, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) once again had to rely on newspaper report to learn about the problem. The Hitavada CityLine reported piling-up of garbage at corner of Dhantoli garden. A look at the heap revealed that the garbage was lying for weeks altogether. Plus the irony of the situation was that the spot where the wastage lay dumped, the NMC under its Swachhta campaign had painted the wall behind to imply message of cleanliness.
The issue about lack of cleanliness appeared in October 16 issued and yet it took almost three days for NMC to take cognisance and instructed the private agency engaged in collection of garbage to clear the spot. This showcases the trouble and gaps in the solid waste management system of NMC wherein citizens are paying the price for no fault of theirs.
While NMC may be faulted for its slow response or turning a blind eye to the rapid rise of garbage dump, the citizens to are at fault for choosing to empty the household garbage in the open. The spot where garbage was plying up is surrounded by hospitals and clinics and yet people do not blink an eye while emptying the bins in public.
