CHHATTISGARH has received 2890 kidney transplant applications in between January 2023 to July 2026, with annual procedures rising from 195 to 312, a nearly 40 percent increase in this period of five years. In last three years, State has registered a sharp rise in kidney related ailments in almost all of its districts and most of them were diagnosed in stage-III where transplant is only solution to save the life of a patient. In this period, the State has also reported deaths of patients waiting for kidney transplants.

As per the latest figures of kidney transplants and its applications State wise including Chhattisgarh by Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, a significant rise in the number of kidney disease cases has been observed in Chhattisgarh, and these now even exceed the number of cases of cancer, tuberculosis (TB), and heart stroke. In this year, till July 31, 132 patients were awaiting kidney transplantation and want a match donor to get kidney. Currently, kidney transplant surgeries have begun in some hospitals of the capital. However, more than 90% of patients still travel to Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, West Bengal and Southern states to undergo surgery. Due to alcohol and tobacco consumption, odd hours of lunch as well as dinner and poor lifestyle play an important role in rising cases of kidney ailments among people of the State.

Apart from Raipur, Bilaspur, Durg and other major urban areas, now small districts of the State have also reported a rise in the cases of kidney ailment patients. But the problem is that due to the lack of donors and facilities to undergo kidney transplant surgeries, patients and their family members face so many difficulties and most of them are waiting for years to get kidney from donor with same blood group and tissues. Dr P Gupta, Nephrologist (kidney specialist) said that family members of even brain dead persons are reluctant to donate kidneys which can save the life of two kidney ailment patients. Despite so many awareness campaigns and activities, kidney donation is still very poor across Chhattisgarh and it is giving a tough time to the patients suffering from lots of health complications due to continuous dialysis process and medicines.
