DURG Police have intensified
their efforts to identify foreign
nationals allegedly residing illegally in the district, with the
Special Task Force (STF)
analysing scanned data of
around 32,000 persons and shortlisting more than 250 individuals for further verification.
As part of the special drive, an
STF team conducted searches
and collected information in several areas of West Bengal, particularly border districts and
other locations linked to the persons shortlisted for verification.
The areas covered included
Medinipur, South 24 Parganas
and Murshidabad, besides other relevant locations.
According to the police, the
exercise was undertaken on the
basis of available data and
information to identify foreign
nationals who may be residing
illegally in Durg district.
The
STF team visited the identified
areas in West Bengal to collect
and document information
relating to the shortlisted individuals. Details available from
various sources are being
compiled and cross-checked,
while a detailed analysis of the
collected data is currently
underway Police officials said that no conclusion would be drawn
solely on the basis of the preliminary data analysis.
The
identity, nationality and other relevant details of the shortlisted persons will be verified, following which further legal
action will be taken in accordance with the law wherever
required. The Durg Police have previously taken action against
a Bangladeshi national found to be residing illegally in the
district, and the person was subsequently deported.
The police said surveillance and verification of suspected illegal foreign nationals would continue on the basis of
available information and technical data.
The latest STF
exercise is part of the ongoing efforts to identify and verify persons whose nationality or immigration status requires
scrutiny. Durg Police have appealed to citizens to immediately inform the police if they come across any suspicious activity or have information regarding a foreign national allegedly residing illegally in the area. Citizens can contact the police helpline at 1800-233-1905. The police said
that information received through the helpline would be
verified and appropriate action would be taken as per law.
