Three RTOs record 32.1 lakh vehicles on road; Daily registration average is more than double since 2021-22

Nagpur’s three Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) registered an average of 607 vehicles daily between April and September 2026, more than double the daily average in 2021-22, raising questions over whether the city’s expanding network of roads and fly-overs can keep pace with the growing vehicle burden. Figures compiled from the City RTO (MH-31), East RTO (MH-49) and Rural RTO (MH-40) show that 1,11,122 vehicles were registered during the first six months of 2026-27.

This compares with 1,05,125 registrations during the entire 2021-22 financial year, when the daily average was approximately 288. The daily registration average has consequently risen by about 111 per cent , adding roughly 319 registrations a day compared with 2021-22. The annual figures show a steady increase. The three RTOs together recorded 1,05,125 registrations in 2021-22, 1,25,806 in 2022-23, 1,42,114 in 2023-24 and 1,70,063 in 2024-25. The April-September 2026 tally has already reached about 65 per cent of the 2024-25 total, although the periods cover different lengths of time.

Two-wheelers dominate

The recorded vehicle population across the three RTOs stands at 32.10 lakh, according to the figures supplied. MH-31 accounts for 15.08 lakh vehicles, followed by MH-40 with 9.19 lakh and MH-49 with 7.83 lakh. A separate vehicle-population statement for Nagpur City, covering MH-31 and MH-49 as of March 31, 2026, records 22,35,869 vehicles. Two-wheelers dominate the mix, accounting for 17,79,300 vehicles, or nearly 80 per cent of the total. The pace of vehicle additions raises questions over whether Nagpur’s new fly-overs and widened roads will be sufficient to handle future traffic. While the city may not yet face congestion on the scale of Pune, the rising registration trend makes it important to assess whether infrastructure expansion is keeping pace with growing vehicle numbers. For comparison, Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad RTOs together registered 5,00,650 new vehicles in 2024-25, compared to 1,70,063 registrations across Nagpur’s three RTOs in the same year. It illustrates the larger scale of vehicle additions in the Pune urban region, while Nagpur’s rising registrations underline the importance of planning ahead. The growing hunger for two-wheelers does not augur well for a city where Government is investing heavily in public transport as it would continue to undermine the later, said the experts.
