In a decisive and aggressive attempt to curb unauthorised electricity usage, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) launched a massive campaign against power thieves across the Nagpur Zone. During a month-long drive conducted throughout September 2026, specialized anti-power theft inspection teams uncovered 958 instances of electricity theft across Nagpur City, Nagpur Rural, and Wardha circles. The widespread operation successfully identified 901 culpable consumers out of the 958 inspected cases, leading to cumulative penal bills and assessment charges totaling Rs 1.19 crore.

The crackdown revealed an aggregate theft of 5,51,000 units of electricity. Following relentless recovery efforts, MSEDCL has already managed to collect Rs 65.70 lakh from 486 consumers, which accounts for 3,07,000 units of the stolen power. Across the different administrative circles, Nagpur City registered the highest intensity of action with 387 reported instances. Violations involving 372 city consumers were established, totaling Rs 55.90 lakh in total assessment, from which Rs 21.40 lakh has already been recovered from 153 consumers. The division-wise breakdown in Nagpur city highlights 103 cases penalised in Mahal, 88 in Civil Lines, 73 in Gandhibagh, 66 in Butibori, and 57 in the Congress Nagar division. Meanwhile, Nagpur Rural Circle uncovered 374 cases, where 342 consumers were handed penal assessments amounting to Rs 46.90 lakh, yielding a recovery of Rs 31.20 lakh from 213 individuals. In the rural sector, Mauda division recorded the highest number of infractions with 130 cases, followed by 90 in Umred, 88 in Saoner, and 66 in Katol.

In Wardha Circle, MSEDCL registered 197 total cases, leading to bills worth Rs 16.60 lakh issued to 187 consumers, with Rs 13.20 lakh subsequently recovered from 120 consumers across Wardha (74 cases), Hinganghat (71 cases), and Arvi (52 cases) divisions. This intensive single-month operation builds upon a broader half-yearly enforcement drive conducted by the power utility. Between April 1 and September 30, 2026, the Nagpur Zone uncovered a total of 1,594 power theft cases valued at over Rs 2 crore, comprising 588 cases in Nagpur Rural, 535 in Wardha, and 471 in Nagpur City. While 351 consumers settled their offenses during the drive by paying the requisite compounding charges to avoid prosecution, strict legal action was taken against repeat or uncooperative offenders, resulting in First Information Reports (FIRs) being registered against three individuals - two under the Gandhibagh Division and one under the Saoner Division. Issuing a stern warning against energy theft, MSEDCL officials emphasized that non-compliant users compromise network safety, inflict heavy financial damage on the state utility, and penalize honest, bill-paying customers. MSEDCL confirmed that enforcement drives will intensify further in the coming days and issued a final appeal urging all unverified users to secure legitimate, authorised electricity connections immediately.
