An aggressive anti-encroachment drive was executed by the district administration and municipal corporation in Jabalpur, backed by heavy police deployment. The demolition targeted the illegal structures belonging to Sameer Banshkar, the prime accused in a brutal murder and violent clash that broke out on Sunday in the Azad Nagar area under Ranjhi Gokalpur ward.
During investigation it was found, the primary accused and his family members had
unlawfully occupied vacant
government land situated in
front of Municipal Regional Office, a reading room and Durga temple.
The encroached land was being used to build illegal shops, houses and even for pig-rearing activities. Further investigations revealed that a nearby pump house had also been illegally occupied and used for residential purposes.
The crackdown follows a tragic sequence of events that began on Sunday night during a bhandara following Navaratri in Azad Nagar. A dispute arose after locals requested a motorist to slow down his speeding bike.
Angered by the reprimand, the youth returned shortly afterward accompanied by accomplices armed with sticks, iron rods and sharp weapons.
The armed group initiated a violent assault on anyone attempting to intervene. During the melee, knife attacks inflicted severe leg injuries on two individuals, while 50-year-old Paras Yadav suffered a critical head injury. Yadav was rushed to a private hospital and placed on ventilator support, but succumbed to his injuries on Monday night. Outraged by the tragedy, local residents placed the body at Vehicle Mod to protest, demanding compensation for the victim's family and swift demolition of the culprits' illegal properties. Following assurances of strict action from the district administration within 24 hours, authorities mobilized bulldozers to raze the identified illegal structures, while efforts continue to apprehend remaining accomplices involved in the homicide.
