Staff Reporter :
BHOPAL traffic police issued
27,152 challans over the past
five months for various traffic violations, including signal jumping and speeding.
However, not a single private
vehicle driver was booked for
driving under the influence of
alcohol during the period. The
absence of drunk-driving challans comes as police stations
across the city continue to register cases against people drinking alcohol in public places.
Police stations reportedly
record around 20 to 25 such
cases daily, particularly during
late-night hours.
Areas such as TT Nagar, MP
Nagar, Bagsewania and Ashoka
Garden reportedly see people
leaving after drinking and
d r i v i n g
two-wheelers and cars, particularly
towards the end of the week. This
has raised questions over why
such drivers are not being
detected during traffic checks.
Breath analysers available:
Traffic Department said it has sufficient number of breath analysers to check motorists for alcohol consumption. Despite this,
no drink-driving challan was
issued against a private vehicle
driver in the five-month period.
Other violations draw action:
Traffic police took action against
nine minors, 191 triple-riding
cases and 131 stunt-driving cases. Forty-four motorists were
penalised for using mobile
phones while driving and 22 for
modified silencers. Two
motorists were booked for consuming tobacco products while
driving. A bus conductor found
allegedly intoxicated while on
duty was also booked.
Special drive planned:
Additional DCP Traffic Basant
Kaul said the Department has
adequate breath analysers and
will conduct a special drive
against drunk driving in the
coming days. The data on 27,152
challans includes a large number of cases involving riding
without helmets and driving
without seat belts.
