Kshetra Vidyut Vitran Company
Ltd (MPPKVVCL) has received a
national-level award for the effective use of Artificial Intelligence
and Machine Learning (AI/ML)
in power distribution operations.
The company was presented
the ‘Best AI/ML Use Case in
Distribution Operations’ award
at fifth Smart Meter Summit
organised by Aayera in New Delhi.
Chief General Manager (IT)
Prashant Gupta received the
award on behalf of the company.
The company is using data
generated from nearly 18 lakh
smart meter consumers to make
the power distribution system
more data-driven, transparent
and efficient. Smart meter data
is being analysed through AI/ML
tools to identify potential irregularities in electricity consumption, following which field
inspections are conducted.
As part of the initiative, 8,887
electricity connections were
inspected and 4,059 irregularities were detected, involving an
assessed amount of approximately Rs 8.33 crore. The initiative has helped strengthen revenue protection and improve
the detection of irregular electricity use.
Smart meter data is also being
used to verify the accuracy of
feeder and transformer mapping
recorded in consumer databases. Analysis of smart meter data
along with consumer complaints
is helping identify areas
experiencing frequent power
outages and low voltage. This
information is being used to
prioritise measures such as
load balancing, network
strengthening and enhancement of transformer capacity.
The company has also started using AI to review cost estimates for electrical works and
study the correlation between
weather conditions and electricity-related complaints.
These initiatives aim to
improve the quality of power
supply, revenue protection and
consumer services through the
effective use of technology.
Managing Director Ajay
Gupta congratulated the IT and
other teams involved in the initiative, saying that the use of
smart meter data and AI/ML
was an important step towards
making the company's power
distribution system smarter,
data-driven and consumercentric. The national award
marks significant recognition
of the company’s efforts to
modernise power distribution
through digital technology,
smart meter data and innovative applications of AI/ML.
