Police examine September threat to Mahalaxmi Jewellers; technical investigation underway to identify senders of letters to eight Itwari bullion traders

Investigation into extortion threats sent to eight bullion traders in the name of Lawrence Bishnoi gang has led police to Khamla. The investigators have found that the letters sent to the traders in Itwari were posted from a post box in Khamla area. Police have found a similar threat letter sent to Mahalaxmi Jewellers in Pratap Nagar on September 15. This has prompted police to examine whether the two incidents are connected. Importantly, handwriting of both the letters is found to be same. However, the September letter did not mention Bishnoi gang. It demanded Rs 10 lakh from the jeweller and threatened him with consequences if the money was not paid. According to police sources, an unidentified man had approached an auto-rickshaw driver near Khamla Chowk. He gave the driver Rs 100 and an envelope addressed to Mahalaxmi Jewellers.

The man told him that the envelope contained sweets and asked him to deliver it to the shop. The elderly driver handed over the envelope without knowing its contents. The shop owner later opened it and found a threatening letter demanding Rs 10 lakh. Police launched an investigation into the incident. However, the probe hit a dead end as the elderly auto-rickshaw driver could not identify the person who gave him the envelope. The latest investigation has brought the September incident into focus. Police are now examining whether the same person or group was involved in both the cases. In the latest case, eight bullion traders in Gandhibagh area received threatening letters demanding Rs 10 lakh from each of them.

The letters claimed to be from shooters of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and threatened to kill the traders and their family members if they failed to pay within three days. The letters were posted on October 20, 21 and 22 from a post box in Khamla. They were routed through Trimurti Nagar post office before reaching their destinations in Itwari. Police traced the postal route while checking the backward movement of the envelopes. The investigators are now carrying out a technical investigation, including checking mobile tower dump data to identify mobile phones active in and around Khamla post box when the letters were posted. Police are also examining the handwriting and other details of the letters to find possible links between the two cases. They have established that the threats were issued by the same person. Tehsil Police have registered an offence against unidentified persons under Sections 308(4), 351(3), 351(4) and 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
