MPPGCL exceeds power

Despite an erratic and challenging monsoon, the hydro power houses of Madhya Pradesh Power Generating Company Limited (MPPGCL) have delivered an impressive performance, generating substantially more electricity than their target during the first seven months of the financial year (FY) 2026-27. The company’s 10 hydro power houses, with a combined installed capacity of 915 MW, generated 1,793 million units of electricity up to October 2026, against the target of 1,600 million units. This means they exceeded the target by 193 million units, reflecting efficient operations and effective management of available water resources. Against the annual generation target of 2,488 million units, the power houses achieved 72.06 per cent by the end of October.

Their combined Plant Availability Factor (PAF) stood at 83.20 per cent. The performance was also better than the corresponding period last year, when generation stood at 1,632 million units against a target of 1,508 million units. Tons Power House achieves nearly 89% of annual target The 315 MW Tons Hydro Power House (Bansagar-1) has emerged as a major contributor to this achievement. Located on the Tons river, the power house generated 797.5 million units by the end of October, achieving more than 88.5 per cent of its annual target of 900 million units in just seven months. Its Plant Availability Factor stood at an impressive 92.2 per cent, well above the 85 per cent benchmark prescribed by the Madhya Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (MPERC).

The performance reflects the unit’s operational efficiency and its ability to make effective use of available water. Bansagar-3 surpasses annual target in October The 60 MW Bansagar-3 Hydro Power House at Deolond has also achieved a significant milestone by surpassing its annual generation target well ahead of the financial year’s end. Against an annual target of 143 million units, the power house had generated 131 million units by October and subsequently increased production to 153.6 million units in the final week of the month, crossing its annual target. The achievement is particularly noteworthy considering that the unit had exceeded its annual target only twice earlier in 2023-24, when it generated 166 million units, and in 2012-13, when production reached 175 million units. Unlike thermal power generation, hydroelectricity production depends heavily on water availability and the operating capacity of individual units. Against this backdrop, exceeding the generation targets despite challenging monsoon conditions highlights the operational efficiency and effective management of MPPGCL’s hydro power houses.
