High Court directs local administration to provide necessary assistance

The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court has ordered the destruction of seized nylon manja worth Rs 6.25 crore in Silvassa, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, instead of transporting it to Nagpur. The Court has directed the local administration to provide all necessary assistance for the operation. The order came after the Nagpur Rural Police seized a huge stock of banned nylon manja from a factory in Silvassa in October. The seizure was made while tracing the source of the banned kite string, following the High Court's directions in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in 2021.

The matter was heard by a division bench of Justice Anil Kilor and Justice Rajnish Vyas. During the hearing, the police informed the Court that transporting such a large quantity of seized manja to Nagpur would involve heavy expenses. They requested permission to destroy it locally with the help of the Silvassa administration. Accepting the request, the High Court directed the District Collector of Silvassa to provide the necessary facilities. It also asked the Pollution Control Committee to grant the required permissions and the Superintendent of Police to provide police personnel for the operation. The Court further directed the State’s Principal Secretary to communicate with the concerned authorities and ensure their cooperation. The seized nylon manja must be destroyed by November 30. The authorities have also been directed to submit a compliance report to the High Court. Advocate Deepak Thakre argued the matter. Advocate Gemini Kasat appeared for the Municipal Corporation, while Advocate Kartik Shukul represented the Central Government.
