Cyber fraudster poses as Railway official, sends fake employee service app
A retired Railway employee was cheated of Rs 32.82 lakh by a cyber fraudster who posed as a railway official. The accused claimed that the victim’s UMID medical card needed to be updated. He sent a fake app and used it to gain access to the family’s bank account.
The 60-year-old victim had retired as an Assistant Works Officer on October 31. On November 2, he received a call from an unknown number. The caller introduced himself as Hemraj, an Assistant Personnel Officer (APO) from the Divisional Railway Manager’s (DRM) office.
He told the victim to update his UMID card. As the retired employee could not understand the process, he handed the phone to his daughter.
The fraudster then sent an app named ‘Railway Employee Self Service’ to her WhatsApp number.
He kept a video call active and asked her to enter
the Pension Payment Order (PPO) number and mobile number. He also sought PDF copies of the UMID cards of all family members.
By guiding her through various steps, the fraudster gained access to their Bank of Maharashtra account details. He also collected the Aadhaar numbers and dates of birth of family members. Over the next two days, the accused transferred Rs 32,82,150 from the victim’s account to different bank accounts through online transactions. The family lodged three complaints on the cybercrime reporting portal. The Cyber Police later registered a case.
