From the familiar sound of sutli bombs and the sparkle of flower pots to colourful sky shots and tiny popping crackers, Diwali shopping is bringing a wide variety of fireworks to the market this year. While traditional firecrackers continue to attract buyers, new varieties, including green crackers and low-noise options, are adding a different dimension to the celebrations. The market has something for every age group and budget.
Flower pots (anars), ground chakkras, sparklers, pencils, rockets, colourful fountains, seven-shot and multi-shot aerial crackers, parachute fireworks and smoke balls are among the varieties. Pop-pops, the tiny paper-wrapped novelty crackers that make a popping sound when thrown on the ground, are a major attraction for children.
Traditional favourites such as sutli bombs, atom bombs, ladi (garlands of crackers) and varieties of crackers continue to feature in festive shopping.
The green cracker category includes SWAS (Safe Water Releaser), STAR (Safe Thermite Cracker) and SAFAL (Safe Minimal Aluminium), developed by CSIR-NEERI. They are designed to reduce particulate emissions by at least 30 per cent compared to conventional crackers. Green versions of flower pots, pencils, sparklers, chakkars and sound-emitting crackers are among the available options.
“Sales have been good this season, and customers are showing interest in different varieties of crackers.
We are also trying to promote eco-friendly products because an environmentally responsible approach is a must. People should enjoy the festival while being conscious of the pollution,” said Rajesh Chourasia, a firecracker shopkeeper.
Nagpur has a special connection with the green cracker movement, as CSIR-NEERI houses the National Centre of Excellence for Green Firecrackers, inaugurated in December 2025. Researchers are also working on newer formulations that could further reduce emissions and visible smoke. However, traditional favourites continue to be associated with Diwali celebrations.
Buyers must remember that not every product sold in the market is permitted. Only authorised, certified green crackers should be purchased, and customers should check manufacturers’ credentials rather than relying on packaging claims alone. With a blend of colourful fireworks, familiar favourites and environmentally conscious alternatives, the festive market is reflecting a gradual shift towards celebrating Diwali responsibly.
