The Burhanpur Water Supply Project, a flagship initiative of the Madhya Pradesh Urban Development Company (MPUDC), was honoured with the prestigious ‘Social Impact Excellence of the Year’ award at the Build India Infra Awards 2026. The ceremony, held in New Delhi, recognised the project’s transformative role in strengthening the drinking water infrastructure of Burhanpur city. The award was presented by Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil in the presence of Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari. Other dignitaries in attendance included Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of State Shripad Yesso Naik, and senior administrative officials. On behalf of MPUDC, Chief Engineer Shailendra Shukla and Technical Officer Kamlesh Bhatnagar accepted the trophy. Implemented with financial assistance from the World Bank, the project features an anicut, an intake well, and a sophisticated Water Treatment Plant (WTP) with a capacity of 50 MLD. The facility utilises scientific filtration and chlorination processes to ensure the delivery of safe and healthy drinking water.

A key highlight of the project is the integration of a SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system, which allows for real-time monitoring of water quality and supply. Furthermore, a high-level laboratory has been established at the WTP site for rigorous daily testing. The project has successfully streamlined water distribution across Burhanpur through a network of eight new overhead tanks and an extensive pipeline system. By replacing damaged legacy pipes and installing metered connections for approximately 41,000 households, the MPUDC has effectively minimised leakages and wastage. Currently, residents receive a consistent supply of 135 litres per capita per day (LPCD). Chief Engineer Shailendra Shukla noted that the project’s success stems from its blend of modern technology and effective management, ensuring long-term water security for the citizens. Managing Director Sanket Bhondve and Additional Managing Director Divyank Singh congratulated the team on this achievement, stating that the national acclaim reflects Madhya Pradesh’s commitment to sustainable urban development and innovation in public infrastructure.
