Economic Offences Wing (EOW) Jabalpur team caught an employee of Jabalpur Municipal Corporation red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 3,000, on Saturday. EOW team apprehended the accused and took him away in their vehicle for further investigation.
According to EOW officials, the accused identified as Rakesh Sharma, was posted in the Establishment Branch of the Municipal Corporation. He demanded a bribe from complainant T. Ramarao, a municipal employee, in order to process his pending medical expenditure of approximately Rs 25,000 for one month. The complainant lodged a complaint that he had been repeatedly visiting the office to get his medical payment cleared, but Sharma kept delaying the matter.
Two days prior to the trap, when Ramarao visited the office, he was told the official was not free. Later, the two met outside the office premises, where Sharma demanded Rs 3,000 to process the payment.
When Ramarao refused to pay, Sharma told him clearly that the work would not be done without the money. After verifying the complaint, EOW team laid a trap. On Saturday, Ramarao called Sharma near the Municipal accepted the Rs 3,000 bribe amount, EOW team caught him red-handed. The complainant also alleged that on Friday, the accountant had called him and said that the medical bill would not be processed without payment. EOW officials are currently interrogating the accused accountant and further legal action is underway.
