RTMNU Senate passes proposal; amendment to be made in ordinance and to be put before BoE
The Senate of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University passed the proposal to award grace marks to the students who play various sports for the university. Adv Manmohan Bajpayee, senior Senate member who had moved the proposal demanded that the students who play sports should be given grace marks for passing the respective examination conducted by the university.
Adv Bajpayee pointed out, “In order to promote sports and sportspersons in the university and to ensure that the players become relevant, focus should be laid on sports and prepare them as professional players.
The timing and period of any sports event they are participating in should not create obstacles in their education. Various facilities have been provided to them for their educational development,
one of which is that while playing for the university, students do not get enough time for studies and it becomes difficult for them to get passing marks.”
“A plan has been made to give grace marks to the players to get support for their academic qualifications. But it has been noticed that there seems to be a mistake in the rules for giving grace marks to the players because just as the concept of grace marks helps the students to pass, the system does not appear to be giving grace marks to the players,” Bajpayee argued.
“Grace marks given to sportspersons for passing the examination should be considered in addition to the grace marks given to other students and the rules should be amended accordingly,” Adv Bajpayee added. Vishnu Changde, Dr Shrikant Bhowate, Dr Payal Thaore, Dr Smeeta Wanjari, Dr Anil Dodewar, Dr Ratiram Chaudhary, Ajay Agrawal, supported the proposal.
Incentive marks still given
Long ago, University had started incentive marks to the students who played sports for university. The decision taken by Dr Dhananjay Welukar, when he was Director of Post Graduate Department of Physicial Education and Recreation. Students playing inter-collegiate tournaments get 10 marks, those come first, second and third get 15 marks while those play at national level get 25 marks. These marks are being given. With the passage of proposal of Adv Bajpayee, the student-player will benefit if he or she is likely to fail in the examination. Students playing sports for university face hardships when they miss examination, though they perform well in studies as well as in sports. On most occasions due to casual approach at college level, these students have to run from pillar to post to complete procedural part.
