Crumbling corridor of Ram Nagars LIT road

Residents of Ram Nagar facing traffic congestion, road deterioration and garbage dumping simultaneously

Once a vital artery for the residents of West Nagpur, the LIT Road in Ram Nagar has transformed into a harrowing obstacle course for daily commuters. A lethal combination of deteriorating asphalt, unauthorised parking, and rampant garbage dumping has turned this stretch into a symbol of urban administrative failure, leaving citizens to navigate a bottlenecked nightmare every single day. Deteriorated path of peril: The structural integrity of the road has reached a breaking point. Craters and uneven surfaces now define the landscape, forcing two-wheelers to swerve dangerously into the path of oncoming traffic.

“It isn’t a road anymore; it’s a series of interconnected pits and the loose gravel spread on road,” says Aniket Deshpande, a local resident. “Every time I ride through here, I’m less worried about the time and more worried about my spinal cord, my bike’s suspension and the fear of skidding.” Parking paradox: Perhaps, the most visible grievance is the unrestricted parking along both sides of the already narrow street. Residents and visitors frequently leave their vehicles on the main carriage-way, effectively reducing a two-lane road into a single, suffocating thread. This creates a severe bottleneck, particularly during peak office hours.

“The parked cars and two-wheelers leave barely enough space for two cars to pass simultaneously at the same time, let alone a bus or an ambulance,” explains Meera Iyer, a regular commuter. “What should be a two-minute drive turns into a ten-minute ordeal. The traffic jams here are not caused by a high volume of moving vehicles, but by the stationary ones that have claimed the road as their private garage.” Garbage menace: Adding to the physical and logistical distress is the aesthetic and hygienic decline caused by illegal garbage dumping. Mounds of household and commercial waste along with the dry leaves of the tree are frequently seen dumped at the centre of the stretch, near a construction site, further emitting a foul stench that blankets the area.

The accumulation of filth has not only become an eyesore but a breeding ground for strays and pests, posing a significant health risk to surrounding Ram Nagar community. Urgent call for intervention: The current scenario at LIT Road is a classic example of urban decay fuelled by a lack of enforcement. Commuters are now demanding that the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and the Traffic Police take immediate action and not just to resurface the road, but to implement strict ‘No Parking’ zones and clear the burgeoning dump sites. Until then, the residents of Ram Nagar remain trapped in a daily struggle for space, time, and basic dignity on their own streets.
