A significant demonstration occurred at the historic Itwara Square on Tuesday as hundreds from the Muslim community, under the All India Muslim Festival Committee, demanded that the cow be declared India’s ‘National Animal’. Protesters emphasised that protecting the animal is a shared cultural and religious responsibility, chanting slogans in support of cow protection.
Committee Patron Shamshul Hasan cited religious tenets, asserting that Islam prohibits the slaughter and consumption of cow meat. “We are true advocates of cow protection as per our religious teachings.
Cow’s milk and ghee are vital, beneficial products used regularly by our community,” Hasan stated.
The demonstrators expressed concern over rising communal disharmony regarding cattle. They argued that declaring the cow a ‘National Animal’ would resolve social divides and clarify misconceptions. Since a vast majority accords the cow maternal status, the committee believes the Central Government should formalise this sentiment to foster national unity. The committee issued an appeal to the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and Chief Minister, urging immediate legislative action. Hasan emphasised that granting ‘National Animal’ status would effectively halt illegal slaughter and end the spread of inflammatory rumours.
