Butibori Police have registered a case against a fourth-year BA LL.B student for allegedly ragging a second-year girl student at Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU), Nagpur. Both students were staying as roommates in the university hostel.
According to police, the complaint was submitted by a professor of MNLU. The report stated that the victim, a second-year student, had been facing continuous harassment and mental distress from her senior roommate for the past several months. The accused allegedly engaged in repeated acts of indiscipline, causing annoyance, hardship and emotional stress to the junior student.
The situation worsened during the winter season when the temperature dropped to around 14 - 15 degrees Celsius. The victim was suffering from cold, cough and fever. Despite her illness, the accused allegedly insisted on keeping the ceiling fan running at full speed late into the night.
On one occasion around 11.30 pm, the victim repeatedly requested the accused to reduce the fan speed, but she refused.
The victim then approached the hostel warden, who sent a security guard to resolve the issue. However, even in the presence of the guard, the accused reportedly refused to lower the fan speed.
Due to the situation, the victim was
forced to leave her room and sleep on the floor in another senior student’s room that night.
Following the complaint, the college’s Anti-Ragging Committee conducted an inquiry and heard the victim’s grievances. Based on the committee’s report, Butibori police registered an offence under the Anti-Ragging Act. Further investigation is underway.
