A major fire broke out at an incense sticks wholesale shop and godown in Gurandi Bazar late Thursday night, triggering panic in the densely populated area. The incident occurred around 1.30 am near Darshan Chowk.
No casualties were reported in the incident. However, goods worth lakhs were gutted in the fire, causing heavy financial loss to the shop owner.
According to local residents, smoke was first noticed coming out of the shop owned by Satyam Chouksey, following which police and the Fire Department were informed.
However, fire fighting operations were allegedly delayed as electricity connection had to be cut before efforts could begin, which took nearly half an hour. By then, the fire had spread inside the premises.
The shop reportedly had a large stock of incense sticks, coconut coir rope and allied material in view of Navratri season. The materials being highly inflammable, flames intensified rapidly and engulfed the entire shop, causing panic among nearby shopkeepers and residents.
Locals initially tried to control the fire but failed due to the intensity of the flames. Fire tenders rushed to the spot soon after receiving information and launched a firefighting operation. After continuous efforts, the blaze was brought under control, preventing it from spreading to adjacent shops. Fire officials said timely action helped avert a major mishap in the crowded market area. The exact property loss and cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained and police have initiated an investigation.
