panic gripped Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose (NSCB) Medical College following a smoke incident at Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on Thursday evening. The incident led to a tense confrontation between hospital staff and concerned relatives. The alarm was raised when thick smoke started spreading at the specialised ward housing newborns.
Preliminary investigations by hospital authorities identified the source as a short circuit in a malfunctioning fan at NICU ward.
As the smoke permeated the hallway, anxious parents and guardians rushed towards the unit in an attempt to secure their infants.
This surge resulted in chaotic scenes within the medical facility, requiring intervention from Garha police station. Garha police arrived promptly to manage the crowd and restore order. During the height of the commotion, rumors circulated regarding death of a newborn, which significantly escalated the distress of families present. However, hospital management moved quickly to dispel these claims. Superintendent Dr Arvind Sharma confirmed that all infants admitted to NICU were completely safe and were unaffected by the smoke.
Regarding the reported fatality, he clarified that the death had occurred prior to the smoke incident due to unrelated medpersonnel during the scare, administrative officials maintained that the staff acted swiftly to contain the situation and prevent a potential fire hazard. The situation was brought under control without any injuries or fire-related damage to NICU equipment. Technicians have since been tasked with inspecting electrical installations outside the ward to prevent a recurrence of such malfunctions.
