Chhattisgarh lags

A latest report released by the Ministry of Heavy Industries has highlighted the current status of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across India, raising concerns about Chhattisgarh’s preparedness for the growing EV transition. As per state-wise data of EV public charging stations (EVPCS) installed by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), Chhattisgarh has shown gradual growth over the years. The State had no charging stations in FY 2020–21, but installations increased to 68 in FY 2021–22, 82 in FY 2022–23, 187 in FY 2023–24, 224 in FY 2024–25, and 46 stations installed till March 1, 2026. In total, 607 EV charging stations have been installed in the last five years, out of which 524 are currently operational, while the remaining have been decommissioned or are non-functional. Despite this steady rise, the state still lags behind leading performers. Karnataka has around 2400 charging stations, Maharashtra over 2200, Gujarat nearly 1500, and Haryana and Andhra Pradesh more than 1300 each.

Even neighbouring states like Madhya Pradesh and Odisha have significantly higher numbers than Chhattisgarh. The report also notes that Rs. 912 crore has been sanctioned under the FAME-II scheme and Rs. 2000 crore under the PM E-DRIVE scheme. However, there is no clear national roadmap for EV charging expansion in the coming years, while private participation remains open. Experts believe that the current infrastructure in Chhattisgarh is not sufficient for future demand. With EV adoption increasing in cities like Raipur, Durg–Bhilai and Bilaspur, there is an urgent need to expand charging networks across highways, residential areas, and commercial hubs. They suggest that the state government should promote public-private partnerships, offer incentives, and accelerate deployment of fast chargers. Without timely expansion, limited infrastructure could slow down EV adoption and affect the state’s clean energy goals.
