Indian Railways to deploy AI

Indian Railways has officially rolled out its ambitious ‘Rail Tech Policy,’ aimed at modernising rail operations and safety through cutting-edge technology and start-up-driven innovation. According to the Bhopal Railway Division, this initiative is designed to address traditional railway bottlenecks while simultaneously opening new avenues for employment and growth for youth and local start-ups. The policy marks a paradigm shift from conventional methods to a tech-first approach, focusing on indigenous solutions to enhance passenger safety and operational efficiency. ‘Rail Tech Portal’ to bridge innovation gaps: A centrepiece of the new policy is the launch of a dedicated ‘Rail Tech Portal,’ which will serve as a digital bridge between the railways and technical experts. Previously, proposing innovative solutions involved complex and lengthy bureaucratic procedures. The new portal digitises and simplifies the entire process. Through this platform, start-ups, independent innovators, or railway departments themselves can initiate ‘Innovation Challenges.’ The railways will share specific problem statements, ranging from track monitoring to automated coach cleaning, and experts will be invited to suggest and develop technical solutions. Historic surge in financial grants: In a significant move to incentives the start-up ecosystem, the Railways has announced a historic increase in grant amounts.

The maximum grant for developing and testing prototypes has been doubled. Furthermore, the ‘Scale-up Grant’ for implementing successful solutions on a mass scale has been increased by more than three times. This financial assistance will be project-based rather than direct cash disbursements, ensuring that resources are utilised effectively for research and development. AI and drone integration a new security shield: Indian Railways is transitioning toward a ‘smart’ security infrastructure, aiming to eliminate human error through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and drone surveillance. As a part of a comprehensive wildlife protection strategy, an AI-based Elephant Intrusion Detection System is being developed for sensitive sections to provide real-time alerts to loco pilots and prevent collisions. For infrastructure monitoring, drones equipped with advanced thermal cameras will be deployed to inspect tracks for cracks or tampering in inaccessible areas and during night hours. The safety overhaul also extends to fire prevention and passenger convenience.

AI-driven smart fire detection and sensor technology will be installed in coaches and parcel vans to trigger immediate alarms upon detecting smoke or abnormal heat. To assist navigation and maintain hygiene, infrared and radar-based ‘Third Eye’ systems are being deployed to prevent accidents during foggy conditions, while AI cameras will provide real-time monitoring of cleanliness at stations and within trains. Opportunities for local start-ups in Bhopal: The policy presents a golden opportunity for the growing start-up hub in Bhopal. Local innovators can now pitch ideas in fields such as drone surveillance, rail stress monitoring, data analytics, and sensor-based solutions. This initiative is expected to provide the railways with cost-effective, indigenous solutions while bolstering the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) mission. By promoting innovation, the railways is providing a global platform to the youth. This new policy will allow young tech-talents to transform their ideas into real-world projects, making the railways safer and more modern. -Naval Agrawal, PRO, Bhopal Railway Division.
