Caught in a Quandary

growing girl

Growing up a girl is at times a little confusing sometimes. Not because life is always hard, but because people keep sending different messages. One moment they say girls can achieve anything and the moment they start confining you in the ‘rules’ of what to wear and how to behave. A girl slowly grows up listening to all of this and somewhere along the way she starts asking herself a question: Who do I actually want to become? Years ago, many girls were not even allowed to go to school.

They always played the second fiddle to the men in the house. An ambitious woman was thought to be disrespectful, rebellious. But the voices had to grow and they did! When more and more women refused to give up on their dreams, a change began taking shape. But even today, things are not perfect. People still have certain ideas about what girls should or should not do. Girls and women are often judged by the society a far too quickly. Sometimes their abilities are doubted before they even get a chance to prove themselves. But fortunately, things are changing. Many girls today are no longer meekly accepting everything they are asked to do.

They ask questions. They want to understand the world. They want to chalk out their own roadmap. Strength does not always look like a big dramatic moment. Sometimes it is much simpler than that. It can be something very normal. A girl studying for her examination even when she feels tired; a girl speaking up in class even if she is nervous; girl deciding that she will try something new even if people think she cannot do it. These things may look very small from the outside, but these small steps slowly change people and eventually, the the society as well.
