MSRTCs Ngp Divn gears up for summer with preventive maintenance drive

Focus on early preparedness, engine cooling systems and passenger safety as temperatures rise Not a single ‘ordinary’ bus broke down due to overheating since July

As Vidarbha prepares for intense summer heat, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) Nagpur Division has initiated a comprehensive maintenance and preparedness drive to ensure safe, reliable and uninterrupted bus services. With temperatures expected to rise sharply, the focus is on preventing overheating and minimising technical failures. Preventive approach takes centre stage: Mahendra Kumar Neware, Mechanical Engineer (Operation), at the divisional workshop, said the division follows a proactive strategy centred on preventive maintenance. “We begin our summer preparations well in advance. Between January and March, all buses undergo complete coolant replacement.

Radiators are inspected, cleaned if choked, and replaced if severely damaged,” he said. “The periodic check-up and engine oil replacement are carried on regularly too,” added Neware. It is to be noted that engine over-heating is not just caused by clogged radiator and coolant but also due to degraded quality of the engine lubricant oil. This early groundwork ensures that the fleet is ready before peak summer conditions set in. Vigilance during peak summer months: From April onwards, Neware further informed, the division operates in a heightened state of alert. Buses are closely monitored for signs of overheating, particularly on long-distance routes where engines face continuous stress due to prolonged operations and extreme heat. Electrical safety measures strengthened: Alongside mechanical maintenance, electrical systems are also being given priority.

Regular inspections are conducted to prevent short circuits and fire hazards, which are more likely during high temperatures. “Our aim is not just operational efficiency but passenger safety. Faulty electric wires have caused a lot of fires even in winters. Timely checks help eliminate risks before they escalate,” Neware noted. Consistent performance and reliability: Neware highlighted that not a single ordinary bus, which form the backbone of MSRTC (Lalpari and other Non-AC buses) in the Nagpur division, has reported break-down due to overheating-related issues since he assumed charge in July 2024. He credited this achievement to disciplined maintenance practices and the dedicated efforts of the technical staff. With careful planning, constant vigilance and technical expertise, the MSRTC Nagpur Division is striving to provide commuters with a safe and dependable travel experience. With the harsh summer conditions prevailing in Vidarbha bring this year though is yet to be seen.
