THE first phase of Census 2027 began on Wednesday in what will be the largest such exercise in the world and it will be conducted digitally for the first time.
It is India’s 16th Census and eighth after Independence. For the first time, the option of self-enumeration will also be available.
Self-enumeration for Census 2027 begins in Odisha
THE self-enumeration facility for Census 2027 was rolled out in Odisha on Wednesday, officials said. Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati completed his self-enumeration online and urged all to do the same to ensure every household is counted in the Census.
“On the commencement of Census 2027, I extend my greetings to the people of Odisha. As the first citizen of Odisha, I have fulfilled my duty by completing my self-enumeration and I urge each one of you to do the same,” the Governor said in a video message. Census, an important national exercise, forms the foundation for planning and development, he said.
“Therefore, your participation in the house listing phase will ensure that every household is counted and represented.
Let’s all come together to make this Census accurate, inclusive and successful,” he said.
K’taka launches awareness
campaign
Karnataka Government on Wednesday launched an awareness campaign for Census 2027 Self Enumeration, urging citizens to complete their details online and cooperate fully with enumerators during the upcoming house listing operations.
The Self Enumeration process will be open from April 1 to April 15, 2026, enabling residents to submit their Census details through the official portal, a statement issued by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s Office said.

off in Sikkim
Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Wednesday commenced the self-enumeration exercise under Census 2027, officials said.
Mathur and Tamang completed the process here via the newly launched online census portal in the presence of State Census Directorate officials.
“Census 2027 will lay a strong foundation for the development journey of the coming decade,” the Governor said.
“Accurate and comprehensive data is the foundation of effective governance, and through this collective effort, we move closer to ensuring equitable development and better planning for all,” the Chief Minister said.
