Maharashtra Federation of educational institutions seeks stay on ongoing process for adjusting surplus teachers against vacancies

Honouring the ruling by High Court regarding maintaining status quo to the process of adjusting surplus teachers against vacancies, the Government should stay the process, demanded Maharashtra State Federation of Educational Institutions. It has submitted a memorandum to Education Minister Dada Bhuse, demanding the immediate suspension of the process for adjusting surplus teachers against vacant posts.

The process was initiated based on the ‘Sanctioned Strength’ (Sanch Manyata) approval for the academic year 2025–26 on the grounds that this process is invalid. The process of adjusting surplus teaching and non-teaching staff has been initiated across the State through the offices of the education officers. Although this process is being implemented in accordance with the Government order regarding ‘Sanctioned Strength Determination’ (Sanch Nirdharan) dated March 15, 2026, the fact remains that the determination of sanctioned strength for all schools in the State has not yet been completed.Furthermore, the adjustment process continues unabated, despite the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court having issued orders to maintain the ‘status quo’. In this regard, a letter was dispatched to the Director requesting a suspension of the process; however, Ravindra Fadnavis, the General Secretary of the Mahasangh, stated in a press release that no action has been taken thus far.

District Collector assures relief to teachers’ workload

District Collector Kumar Ashirwad has given an assurance to reduce the workload of teachers who have been assigned dual duties—specifically, serving as Booth Level Officers (BLO) and participating in census operations—by assigning them only one of these tasks. Furthermore, he expressed a positive stance regarding the suspension of the process for adjusting surplus teachers, considering the current circumstances. On Tuesday, the Nagpur District Education Action Committee submitted a memorandum outlining various demands to Kumar Ashirwad. Present on this occasion were former MLC Nago Ganar, General Secretary of the Maharashtra State Federation of Educational Institutions Ravindra Fadnavis, along with Panchbhai, Gavhankar, Bhushan Talhar, Vilas Gabhane, and office-bearers from various teachers’ organisations. A detailed discussion on various issues was held with the District Collector during this meeting. The office-bearers of the Action Committee demanded that teachers from private-aided and unaided schools should not be appointed as BLOs for the purpose of electoral roll revision. They also requested the immediate revocation of any orders regarding punitive action taken against teachers in this context. The Committee underscored the necessity of prioritising educational quality by reducing the burden of additional administrative duties placed upon teachers.
