No respite as intense heat

The city is in the grip of a severe heat wave, with temperatures rising steadily over the past few days. The mercury has been climbing by nearly one degree each day and on Saturday, it reached the highest level of the season so far. Only by 12 noon, the temperature touched 40°C and late in the afternoon it crossed 42°C, reaching 42.6 degrees. The weather department has indicated that it may climb up to 43°C to 44°C in coming days.

The sharp rise in temperature is being credited to intense sunlight and hot winds sweeping across the region since morning. Spokesman of Weather Department informed that the heat this year is already showing a stronger trend compared to last year. On the same date last year, the maximum temperature was recorded at 41.5°C, whereas this time it is likely to cross 44 degree mark.

On Friday, the maximum temperature had already gone beyond 42°C, signalling a continued upward trend. The impact of the heat is clearly visible on daily life, with roads wearing a deserted look during peak afternoon hours. Children and the elderly are among the worst affected. Doctors have advised people to avoid stepping out in the afternoon and to stay hydrated. Weather experts have warned that the coming days could be more challenging if the current trend continues. Residents have been urged to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from heat related illnesses.
