MERLIN Shibu John, a nationally talented fencer of Sabre category of Raipur District Fencing Association was selected to represent India in an upcoming Bankok Open Fencing Championship 2026 to be played at Suralai Hall
in Bangkok, Thailand from May 1 to 3.
She will be a part of the seven-member Indian contingent marking a significant milestone in her sporting journey. It is worth mentioning that Merlin has consistently brought pride to Chhattisgarh through her top-class performances among the best in the fencing sports at the national level.
Representing the state, she secured a bronze medal in both individual and team Sabre events at the 67th National School Games held in Aurangabad during the 2023–24 season.
She further showcased her excellence by winning a bronze medal in the team championship at the 35th Senior National Fencing Championship 2025 held in Kannur, Kerala. Continuing with her excellent form and setting new benchmarks with every competitions, Merlin has brought accolades for Chhattisgarh representing in more than 20 sub-junior, junior and senior national championships.
Presently, undergoing special training at SAI Khelo India Centre in Aurangabad, Merlin continues to refine her skills and prepare for higher levels of competition. The upcoming event in Bangkok will be her first exposure at the international level and based on her consistent performances so far, she is seen as a strong contender with promising chances of winning a medal for the country. Her selection has been widely appreciated by officials of the
State President of Chhattisgarh Chhattisgarh State Fencing Association S Prakash (IAS), General Secretary Sameer Khan, Working President Ajit Singh Patel, Treasurer Akhilesh Dubey and the Vice President duo of Nikhil Jambhulkar
and Mohnish Verma extended their best wishes to Merlin
for the international championship.
Expressing confidence in her abilities, the association office bearers hoped that she will continue to bring laurels to the state and the nation with a podium finish in her event.
