‘Natural’ cure for insomnia, pain, stress: Panchakarma therapy a lifeline for patients
Staff Reporter :
IN TODAY’S fast-paced world, an irregular lifestyle is taking a heavy toll on our physical and mental well-being. From office-going professionals struggling with prolonged sedentary hours, back pain, and corporate stress, to students battling exam-induced insomnia and poor dietary habits, modern life has inadvertently invited a wave of chronic ailments. Amidst this chaos, the ancient science of Ayurveda’s ‘Panchakarma’ has emerged as a vital lifeline. Rather than merely masking symptoms, this therapy works to eradicate the root cause of diseases by ‘detoxing’ the body from within, offering a holistic path to recovery for those suffering from conditions like arthritis, chronic fatigue, and digestive issues.
When we interacted with the patients at the Panchakarma Department of Khushilal Ayurvedic Medical College, they shared their personal recovery journeys.
Rahul, a 34 year-old corporate professional, shared, ‘Sitting at a desk for 10 hours a day left me with constant back pain, and I was tired of relying on painkillers every other day. After a few sessions of Panchakarma here, I finally feel the pain subsiding from the root; it’s a massive relief to be able to work again without that constant dependency on medication.’ Priya, a 21-year-old student, echoed this experience, stating, ‘Between competitive exams and late-night study sessions, I was constantly dealing with severe tension headaches and digestion issues. The Shirodhara therapy has been a real game-changer for me as it hasn’t just helped my physical health, but it has brought a sense of calm and mental clarity that I really needed to get back on track.
Sharing more information on this, Dr Kamini Soni, Professor and HOD of the Panchakarma Department at Khushilal Ayurvedic Medical College, explains that Panchakarma is not just a treatment, but a systematic and scientific process to purify the body. It balances the three doshas of our body: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
When this balance is disturbed, diseases are born. Panchakarma removes the toxic substances accumulated within the body and revitalises it.
According to Dr Kamini Soni, Ayurveda describes five main karmas (Pradhan Karma) in Panchakarma, which include Vamana, Virechana, Basti (Enema), Nasya, and Raktamokshana. These five procedures are performed to deeply purify the body. Apart from these, depending on the nature of the disease and the patient’s requirements, several other special therapies are also provided in the department, which are highly beneficial. Prominent among these are Shirodhara, Saptadhara, Shiro-pichu, Pichu, Pizhichil, Lepa Therapy, Avagaha Swedana (Avagaha Sodhana), Udvartana, Churna Massage, Lekhana Basti, Leen Therapy, and Shashtishali Pinda Sweda.
Dr Soni specifically advises that Panchakarma is an intensive process; therefore, it should only be performed under the supervision of a trained and expert physician. Before starting treatment, doctors examine the patient’s physical constitution (Prakriti) and the disease, after which the therapy is determined.
Attempting Panchakarma without medical advice can be harmful.
Dr Soni states that these therapies not only provide relief from chronic Vata diseases and muscle pain but also boost the body’s immunity. Panchakarma is considered highly beneficial for everything from weight loss to skin glow and mental peace. Dr Soni believes that if Panchakarma is made a part of one’s lifestyle under expert supervision, it is possible to get rid of even the most serious diseases. It is a completely natural treatment capable of rejuvenating the body without any side effects.
