Seven houses, sheds razed near Upper Lake as administration enforces strict FTL norms
Staff Reporter :
The district administration and Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) have intensified their campaign to protect the ecological integrity of the Upper Lake, often referred to as the city’s lifeline. In a significant joint operation on Monday, teams from the municipal body and the TT Nagar SDM circle executed a major anti-encroachment drive in the Suraj Nagar and Gaura Gaon areas. Heavy machinery was deployed to dismantle structures built within the 50-meter restricted zone of the Full Tank Level (FTL).
The operation resulted in the demolition of seven permanent concrete houses, three temporary sheds, and illegal extensions of four commercial shops.
Phased execution of
identified illegal occupations
Government records indicate that a total of 347 illegal encroachments have been officially mapped along the catchment areas of the lake, all of which are slated for removal in a phased manner. Prior to this latest intervention, only 50 structures had been cleared before the campaign faced temporary suspension due to administrative reasons. Senior officials have now issued a stern warning that no construction compromising the water storage capacity or the surrounding environment will be spared. The current phase marks a decisive shift towards total transparency and strict enforcement of environmental norms.
Legal compliance and prior notice to violators
Authorities emphasised that the demolition was carried out following all necessary legal protocols, including the prior issuance of eviction notices.
The SDM office had recently served formal notices to several occupants, including TS Chauhan, Ganeshibai, Mahesh Vishwakarma, Prayagi Lal Jatav, and Laxman Maran. Furthermore, even semi-government installations, such as the pump house of the Sai Sports Authority, were flagged and notified for being within the prohibited perimeter. Monday’s proceedings focused on these specifically identified properties and encroached tin sheds to ensure the systematic restoration of the lake boundary.
