Drawing the curtain on days of intense lobbying and speculation, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday announced its candidates for the Maharashtra Legislative Council polls, naming Nagpur’s Sanjay Bhende among the five nominees. With elections slated for nine seats and the party holding a clear numerical advantage, the BJP has fielded candidates for five seats it is confident of winning. In a key political move, the party has also nominated Pradnya Satav for the by-poll to the seat vacated after she quit the Congress to join the BJP. A seasoned veteran, Bhende currently serves as Vice-President of the Maharashtra BJP and heads the Nagpur Nagrik Sahakari Bank. Known for his low-profile yet consistent work over more than three decades, Bhende has played a significant role in strengthening the party’s base in Nagpur and across the State.

He was also actively involved in strategising during the recent Nagpur Municipal Corporation elections along with Dayashankar Tiwari and MLA Pravin Datke. The other candidates announced by the BJP are Sunil Karjatkar, Madhavi Naik, Vivek Kolhe, and Pramod Jathar. The selections indicate a calibrated move by the BJP to balance experience, loyalty, and regional representation while managing internal aspirations. The final list reflects the party’s attempt to balance organisational experience, regional representation, and internal dynamics. Many individuals within the BJP were keen to secure an opportunity to serve in the Legislative Council. Numerous aspirants were actively making efforts to secure a party nomination for themselves.

Intense lobbying was being conducted by many of them with the party's top leadership. A meeting of key BJP leaders from Maharashtra was held in Mumbai to discuss this matter. During this meeting, a list of 34 names was finalised. All these names were subsequently forwarded to the BJP’s central leadership. Out of these, six names have been approved by the BJP High Command. The names of all these candidates have now been officially announced by the BJP. It appears that while declaring the candidates for the Legislative Council, the BJP has taken a decision after considering various perspectives.
