NMC withdraws census duty orders for 43

Staff Reporter :

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has withdrawn its earlier orders appointing 43 teachers as enumerators and supervisors for Census work, following directions from the Bombay High Court, Nagpur Bench. The teachers were among the petitioners in Writ Petition No. 3004 of 2026, filed by The Sikh Education Society and others, challenging the communications issued by NMC on April 5 and April 6, 2026 directing them them to perform duties related to the upcoming Census 2027. During the hearing held on April 23, a division bench of Justice Urmila Joshi-Phalke and Justice Nivedita P Mehta was informed by the civic body that the required number of enumerators and supervisors had already been fulfilled in Ashi Nagar Zone No. 09.

The NMC further stated that the services of the petitioning teachers were no longer needed and it was ready to withdraw the impugned communications. Taking this statement on record, the High Court directed the NMC to formally withdraw the orders and communicate the same to the petitioners. With this assurance, the Court disposed of the petition. Following the court’s direction, Ganesh Rathod, Charge Officer and Deputy Commissioner of Ashi Nagar Zone, issued an official communication to the 43 teachers. The letter informed them that their appointment orders for Census duty -issued earlier on April 6 - stand withdrawn. It also clarified that since the staffing requirement had already been met, they were being relieved from the assigned duties.

Other teachers to continue census duty
While the relief has been granted to the 43 petitioner-teachers, the NMC has clarified that other teachers who have been appointed as enumerators and supervisors will continue to perform census duties as scheduled. NMC stated that sufficient manpower is required for the Census 2027 exercise and those not covered by the court order will be expected to report and complete their assigned responsibilities.
