Panic gripped the posh Lok Bhavan area on Tuesday after a significant portion of the main road suddenly caved in following a high-pressure burst in a 5-MGD (Million Gallons per Day) raw water pipeline. The force of the rupture was so intense that the road was transformed into a virtual pond within minutes, resulting in the wastage of lakhs of litres of water. Fortunately, no vehicles were passing over the specific stretch at the moment of the collapse, preventing a major tragedy. According to preliminary investigations by Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials, the underground pipeline, which carries raw water from the Kamala Park pump house to the filter plant opposite the Vidhan Sabha, succumbed to the increasing pressure of heavy vehicular traffic. The initial leakage eroded the soil beneath the asphalt, creating a hollow cavity.

Unable to withstand the weight and the surging water pressure, the road surface eventually buckled and collapsed. Eyewitnesses reported that the water fountained several feet into the air, quickly submerging the thoroughfare and forcing authorities to divert traffic to alternative routes. The affected pipeline is a critical link for the city’s raw water supply infrastructure. To mitigate the impact on residents, departmental officials have clarified that water supply to the affected regions, specifically Malviya Nagar and the Vidhan Sabha area, will be temporarily diverted to the Narmada pipeline network. This alternative arrangement will remain in place until the repair work is completed to ensure minimal inconvenience to the public. Upon receiving the alert, the BMC technical team and senior engineers rushed to the spot to shut off the main valves and initiate excavation. Heavy machinery has been deployed to remove the damaged sections of the pipe and replace them with new reinforced structures.
