The inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games 2026 showcased a promising pool of talent from India’s tribal communities, bringing together emerging and established athletes on a single platform. Held across Raipur, Jagdalpur and Ambikapur, the Games featured participation from 30 states and Union Territories, with nearly 3,800 athletes competing in nine disciplines. A total of 106 gold medals were contested across sports such as archery, athletics, football, hockey, swimming, weightlifting and wrestling, while traditional disciplines like mallakhamb and kabaddi were included as demonstration events. The competition comes at a crucial time as India gears up for the Commonwealth Games 2030 and eyes a bid for the 2036 Summer Olympics, strengthening its talent pipeline. Among the standout performers was swimmer Manikanta L, who emerged as the most decorated athlete of the Games. The 21-year-old clinched eight gold medals and one silver, playing a key role in Karnataka’s overall triumph. A specialist in the 200m breaststroke, he used the event as preparation for upcoming international competitions, including the Asian Games. Fifteen-year-old Anjali Munda from Odisha was another breakout star.

Competing in her first Khelo India event, she secured five gold medals across multiple categories, demonstrating exceptional versatility and composure against older competitors. In archery, Komalika Bari, already a World Cadet and Youth Champion, lived up to expectations. She claimed gold in the individual and mixed recurve events, though she had to settle for silver in the women’s team competition after a closely fought final against Nagaland. Gujarat’s Bhargavi Bhagora also impressed, pushing Bari to the limit in the individual final. Football saw a strong leadership display from Kiran Pisda, captain of the Chhattisgarh women’s team. She led her side to gold, contributing as both top scorer and, notably, stepping in as goalkeeper during a crucial penalty shootout in the semifinals. In weightlifting, Jharkhand’s Babulal Hembrom continued his rise, earning silver and signaling readiness to compete at the senior level. Meanwhile, experienced lifter Jhilli Dalabehera from Odisha secured gold in the 53kg category, adding to her impressive international record. Athletics also produced exciting talent, with sprinter Shiv Kumar Soren winning gold in both the 100m and 200m events, clocking 10.58 seconds and 21.51 seconds respectively. The Games not only highlighted current achievers but also identified future prospects, reinforcing the importance of grassroots initiatives in India’s sporting ecosystem.
